CNMA Newsletter - November 2024

Message From the President

Hello Friends,

Election time is here. It is time to cast your presidential, state, and local votes if you haven't already. This is an exciting, and anxiety-provoking time for many of us, so hopefully you are getting your self-care needs met. One of the lovely things about our beautiful state of California is how we can get outside and celebrate nature. Go outdoors if you can, hike, swim, walk, or do those things that bring you joy. Our chosen profession is not the easiest. It takes a lot of heart and dedication. So don't forget to rejuvenate yourself. We need camaraderie and solidarity in our work, now more than ever.  I am enthusiastic about meeting with all of you in person and virtually for the CNMA Annual Meeting on November 9th, 2024. This is a great opportunity to come together with your midwife colleagues from across the state. We have many fantastic presenters lined up to help fuel our fires and provide new resources.

Additionally, you can sign up for a Two-Part Abortion Workshop the virtual abortion training and The in-person training, or the  Breech Without Borders Hybrid Workshop both happening on Sunday, November 10th. The annual meeting will give us a chance to socialize with other midwives. Don't forget to bring your dancing shoes for the after-party on Saturday night! If you have not registered yet, don’t worry. Registration is still open! Don’t miss this opportunity to reignite your sense of purpose as a midwife and connect with other amazing midwives from across the state!

I can't wait to see you all at the Annual Meeting.

Respectfully yours,

Amita Graham

UCSF Closure of the Masters in Midwifery:

In addition to the SF Chronicle’s front page coverage in June of the UCSF closure of the nurse-midwifery masters program, California Health Line published an article on Aug 26th highlighting this protested move by UCSF. CNMA, along with our partners at the Future of Abortion Council, has met with leadership from the School of Nursing to advocate for the importance of maintaining a master’s option for nurse-midwives. CNMA continues to actively advocate for a master’s pathway for nurse-midwives in northern California.

On-Demand Webinars and Other Resources

Vaccination and Pregnancy Video

CDC recommends that all adults receive certain vaccinations to protect against harmful and deadly infections. These recommendations are based on a person’s age, health status, and certain risk factors.

Some vaccinations are routinely recommended during pregnancy, while others are delayed until after pregnancy. Other vaccinations might be recommended under certain circumstances after discussing risks and benefits with your pregnancy care professional. Watch this video from the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine to learn more about maternal vaccination in pregnancy.

Fostering a culture of immunization in your practice

Public Health Foundation is excited to share the recent release of a new online training course, Fostering the Culture of Immunization in Your Practice, in partnership with CDC. This course is designed to support public health and health care professionals in creating a positive culture of immunization in the workplace with every patient visit. To accompany the training, Public Health Foundation has also developed a promotional tool kit that includes sample messaging for social media and newsletters, imagery, short video clips, and more.

Addressing Maternal Mortality and ACEs in Reproductive Health

Improving reproductive and maternal health outcomes can have a positive impact on families and can mitigate ACEs and toxic stress later in life. California Surgeon General Dr. Diana Ramos recently launched Strong Start & Beyond, a movement to reduce California’s maternal mortality rate 50% by December 2026. Strong Start & Beyond is focused on fostering awareness, encouraging active participation in health, and building access to resources for mothers, pregnant people, and their families.

Last year, ACEs Aware worked in partnership with Dr. Ramos to host a webinar series called ACEs and Trauma-Informed Care in Reproductive Health. All sessions in the series are available to view on demand and offer continuing education credit.

ACEs Aware continues to present on the topic of ACEs and reproductive health. In September, Sara Johnson, MD, FACOG, an adviser to ACEs Aware, presented at the UCSF Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences Grand Rounds on addressing ACEs during prenatal care and how providers can build trust and improve health.

Why midwives stay and why midwives leave: Sustaining the midwifery workforce

Almost a quarter of AMCB-certified midwives report not working in the discipline of midwifery. While burnout gets much attention in the media, leaving (and staying in) midwifery is complex and often painful. This session will explore why midwives leave practice and offer individual, organizational, and societal-level strategies to retain midwives based on ten years of research about midwives' professional well-being. Presented by Elisabeth Brie Thumm, PhD, CNM, RN, MBA, FACNM

Providing Equitable Care to Patients after a First Cesarean

Do you care for pregnant patients who have undergone a prior cesarean?

We invite you to participate in an interview about barriers to providing equitable care to pregnant people who have had a prior cesarean. We are interested to talk to you in order to better understand the challenges and successes you have when providing care to patients who desire a VBAC or a repeat cesarean.

The study researchers are co-principal investigators Dr. Nicholas Rubashkin from the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences; Dr. Patience Afulani, in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Dr. Margaret Handley in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Center for Vulnerable Populations; Dr. Miriam Kuppermann from the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences.

You may be eligible if you:

Are a nurse, midwife, physician, or hospital administrator who is involved with providing care to pregnant people who have undergone a prior cesarean.

Are there benefits to taking part in the study? There will be no direct benefit to you from participating in this study.  However, the information that you provide may help health professionals better support patients in their pregnancy decisions and eventually may help lower the cesarean rate, which has been identified as a public health priority in California.

How much time does the study take?

The first interview will be 30-90 minutes.  A second follow up interview lasting 30-60 minutes may be necessary if the researchers have more questions about your story. You may speak with the researcher for up to 2.5 hours over the course of one year.

Where will the interview take place?

Over the phone, via the internet, or face-to-face in an agreed upon private place.

Will I be paid?  Are there any costs to me?

You will receive a $50 gift card for the first interview.

You will receive a $25 gift card for a follow-up interview.

Midwife Crush Mondays!

Do you know an amazing Midwife who is doing revolutionary work? We want to feature them on our social media platforms!

CNMA is looking for submissions for our new social media series “Midwife Crush Monday” where we highlight the stories of trailblazing midwives across the industry who are making a difference in the midwifery profession. You can even submit yourself!

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Midwife’s name (include pronouns)

  • Affiliated organization(s)

  • Why you became a midwife (and anything awesome you’d like to brag about)

  • Headshot/Photo if available

  • Bonus: Please include social media handles for tagging!

Please send submissions to sm@cnma.org for consideration!

You're receiving this communication because you are a current or former member of the ACNM/CNMA or because you signed up from the CNMA website.
