CNMA Newsletter - December 2024

Message From the President

Happy Holidays Everybody!

I hope you all enjoy your time with family and friends and plan to connect and celebrate as we close out 2024. It was wonderful meeting and connecting with so many of you at this year's annual meeting in Marin. Shout out to Paris, who did a fantastic job as the MC and coordinator of the event, thank you!  There was a lot of meaningful content and conversations that emerged at our meeting. I hope we will bring that energy with us into the new year as we work to further the mission and goals of this organization.  I am honored to have an opportunity to be part of this hard work. Many brilliant people are working in this association, making great strides through their efforts. I wish to extend a special thank you to the CNMA chairpeople and volunteers working on antiracism, health policy, workforce development, and membership. You all are truly an inspiration, and greatly appreciated.

CNMA is doing work that is paving a road to helping all of us to do our jobs better. At CNMA we lay the framework for midwifery legislation for our community and the nation. I am a firm believer that professional organizations are important to the work we do. It supports research, education, guidelines for practice, and in our case legislative work to support what we do daily in our jobs. Hopefully, each of you has joined or renewed your membership this year. If membership isn’t right for you, you can choose to donate to help us continue this good work.

I’m ready to take action. During my term as President at CNMA expanding access to midwifery education will continue to be at the forefront of my goals. I plan to focus on specific areas of interest including midwifery mentoring and precepting, midwifery policy, midwifery promotion, community education, and to support anti-human trafficking efforts.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, especially in this current political climate. No matter what obstacles we face, this will not stop us from doing this good work and continuing to keep California at the forefront of progressive change for the safety and wellbeing of all who are impacted by maternal family health (everyone!). This year as you are giving gifts consider making donations to organizations that support furthering the goals and intentions of this organization. Consider what you can do to enhance yourself as midwives and to be in solidarity with midwives and communities everywhere. I have included some links below for holiday giving.

Please reach out to me anytime at president@cnma.org I would love to hear from you.

In the spirit of support,

Amita

Amita Graham, MPH, CNM, WHNP, IBCLC

Vaccination and Pregnancy Video

CDC recommends that all adults receive certain vaccinations to protect against harmful and deadly infections. These recommendations are based on a person’s age, health status, and certain risk factors.

Some vaccinations are routinely recommended during pregnancy, while others are delayed until after pregnancy. Other vaccinations might be recommended under certain circumstances after discussing risks and benefits with your pregnancy care professional. Watch this video from the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine to learn more about maternal vaccination in pregnancy.

Fostering a culture of immunization in your practice

Public Health Foundation is excited to share the recent release of a new online training course, Fostering the Culture of Immunization in Your Practice, in partnership with CDC. This course is designed to support public health and health care professionals in creating a positive culture of immunization in the workplace with every patient visit. To accompany the training, Public Health Foundation has also developed a promotional tool kit that includes sample messaging for social media and newsletters, imagery, short video clips, and more.

Addressing Maternal Mortality and ACEs in Reproductive Health

Improving reproductive and maternal health outcomes can have a positive impact on families and can mitigate ACEs and toxic stress later in life. California Surgeon General Dr. Diana Ramos recently launched Strong Start & Beyond, a movement to reduce California’s maternal mortality rate 50% by December 2026. Strong Start & Beyond is focused on fostering awareness, encouraging active participation in health, and building access to resources for mothers, pregnant people, and their families.

Last year, ACEs Aware worked in partnership with Dr. Ramos to host a webinar series called ACEs and Trauma-Informed Care in Reproductive Health. All sessions in the series are available to view on demand and offer continuing education credit.

ACEs Aware continues to present on the topic of ACEs and reproductive health. In September, Sara Johnson, MD, FACOG, an adviser to ACEs Aware, presented at the UCSF Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences Grand Rounds on addressing ACEs during prenatal care and how providers can build trust and improve health.

Why midwives stay and why midwives leave: Sustaining the midwifery workforce

Almost a quarter of AMCB-certified midwives report not working in the discipline of midwifery. While burnout gets much attention in the media, leaving (and staying in) midwifery is complex and often painful. This session will explore why midwives leave practice and offer individual, organizational, and societal-level strategies to retain midwives based on ten years of research about midwives' professional well-being. Presented by Elisabeth Brie Thumm, PhD, CNM, RN, MBA, FACNM

Providing Equitable Care to Patients after a First Cesarean

Do you care for pregnant patients who have undergone a prior cesarean?

We invite you to participate in an interview about barriers to providing equitable care to pregnant people who have had a prior cesarean. We are interested to talk to you in order to better understand the challenges and successes you have when providing care to patients who desire a VBAC or a repeat cesarean.

The study researchers are co-principal investigators Dr. Nicholas Rubashkin from the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences; Dr. Patience Afulani, in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Dr. Margaret Handley in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Center for Vulnerable Populations; Dr. Miriam Kuppermann from the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences.

You may be eligible if you: Are a nurse, midwife, physician, or hospital administrator who is involved with providing care to pregnant people who have undergone a prior cesarean.

Are there benefits to taking part in the study? There will be no direct benefit to you from participating in this study.  However, the information that you provide may help health professionals better support patients in their pregnancy decisions and eventually may help lower the cesarean rate, which has been identified as a public health priority in California.

How much time does the study take? The first interview will be 30-90 minutes.  A second follow up interview lasting 30-60 minutes may be necessary if the researchers have more questions about your story. You may speak with the researcher for up to 2.5 hours over the course of one year.

Where will the interview take place?Over the phone, via the internet, or face-to-face in an agreed upon private place.

Will I be paid?  Are there any costs to me? You will receive a $50 gift card for the first interview. You will receive a $25 gift card for a follow-up interview.

Interested volunteers: Send an email to: Nicholas.rubashkin@ucsf.edu
